Both will be discussing Deanna's stroke, how she was found unconscious on the bathroom floor of her sister's home... rushed by ambulance to Greenwich hospital where the staff did not diagnose her Stroke. We will discuss with them – their views on how and why this happened. Deanna was transferred to Westchester Medical Center Trauma Unit for about 10 days and then transferred to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where she spent 8 weeks in the Brain/Stroke ward and finally to St Johnland Rehabilitation Center in Kings Park where she started physical and speech therapy. Deanna and Eddie learned fast that their insurance for physical therapy had run out and her remaining recovery would not be covered. Dr. Kokkosis is board certified in vascular surgery and is the Director for Carotid Interventions in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Stony Brook Medicine. She is also Associate Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. In addition to carotid procedures clinical areas of expertise include open and endovascular approaches to aneurysmal disease, peripheral arterial disease, dialysis access, thoracic outlet syndrome and venous disease. She has taken part in two clinical trials for transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR); the Post Approval study of Transcarotid Artery Stenting in Patients with Significant Carotid Artery Disease (THE ROADSTER 2 Post Approval Study) and The ENROUTE Transcarotid Neuroprotection System (NPS) DW-MRI Evaluation. Outside of the operating room, Dr. Kokkosis is highly involved with medical student education at the Renaissance School of Medicine, and with resident education as the Associate Program Director for General Surgery at Stony Brook. At the national level she participates in student/resident education and committees for the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). Dr. Kokkosis received her Doctor of Medicine at Stony Brook School of Medicine. She later completed the integrated vascular surgery program at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York The Topic of ReneMarie's Stroke of Luck Show will be TCAR PROCEDURES FOR STROKE PREVENTION. Dr. Kokkosis will discuss the new minimally invasive transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) procedure that uses a special transcarotid neuroprotection system (NP) designed to reduce the risk of stroke during the insertion of the stent. The TCAR procedure offers patients a safer method of carotid stenting through a small incision at the base of the neck and direct carotid artery access along with neuro-protective flow reversal during delivery of the stent.
